Children and Family Services
A Home, A Village, and sometimes…
It is common knowledge that when some children experience emotional distress, they are likely to “act out.” That is, they may become disruptive and defiant. They may rebel against their parents and teachers, throw ‘tantrums’ or storm out of rooms and slam doors. They may fail in school or show little motivation to succeed. They may adopt an “I don’t care” attitude or engage in high-risk behaviors. They may appear moody, agitated or aggressive.
Sometimes children “act in.” Young children may
become clingy. Older kids may withdraw and isolate, squandering hours and hours
on the internet. Acting-in kids may lose interest in once pleasurable
activities, and show little zest for life. They may sleep too much yet always
seem tired. They may develop social anxieties, depression, or other fears and
phobias. They may exhibit obsessions and compulsions, or complain of somatic
problems like stomach aches and headaches. But many children we see are highly motivated and are already trying their best. These kids may be struggling with unrecognized learning disabilities or learning delays, attentional and/or memory retention difficulties, and/or sensory-motor impairments, to name a few possible sources of learning problems.
Learning
challenged kids may benefit from a competent psycho-educational assessment and
appropriate intervention strategies. At NICA, in fact, most counseling with children will require parent and/or family involvement in the assessment and treatment process. As all children are different, with different needs and resources, so too should any evaluation process and treatment plan be different to meet each child’s unique needs and circumstances. At NICA, we provide comprehensive assessment services (ages 8 and older) and treatment services (ages 12 and older) to children and their families. The counselors of Northern Illinois Counseling Associates, P.C. (NICA) strive to quickly connect with young people and relate to them in a meaningful way. We care deeply about the children in "our village." Adults Ψ Couples Ψ Women's Center Children and Families Ψ Testing and Assessment Ψ Consultation |
