Benefits of Psychological Services

By Dr. Larry B. Gelman

As a noun, “benefits” are tangible results of good deeds and services accrued to a receiver.  As a verb, “benefits” enable you to make the most out of your situation.  In either instance, “benefits” are good.

The “benefits” which accompany and follow NICA's psychological services are innumerable, yet several should be articulated as central to what can be gotten or obtained in the consultation room with a real expert:

  1. You get to be looked at from your point of view without any prior judgment

  2. You get to be seen for who you are and who you can become

  3. You get to be listened to by an objective party, in the “telling of your tale”, in your own way

  4. You get to be heard from you’re the depths of your own subjective experiential reality

  5. You get to be touched by the truth of your truth

  6. You get to be felt in a manner which allows you to respectfully access your deepest feelings.

It is just as important to know that competent mental health services provides you with a  safe “holding environment”, within which and out from which, you can “blossom and grow” to your fullest potential.

  1. You receive faith, hope and trust that your skills and abilities are sufficient for life’s struggles

  2. You receive permission and encouragement to stumble wildly while you learn as you grow

  3. You receive alternative frames of reference and heuristic “tools” to solve problems in your life

  4. You receive healthy challenge to commit to failure NOT being an option, even when it always is

  5. You receive forgiveness for your neediness, dependency, helplessness and vulnerability

  6. You receive love as a gift which obliges you to keep giving.

Northern Illinois Counseling Associates, P.C. (NICA) is acutely aware that your decision to seek and obtain professional assessment, diagnosis and/or treatment represents a significant commitment of your time, energy and money.  We respect your privacy, value your confidentiality and are privileged to keep and to hold all of your information between us whenever possible, as if it were wholly sacred.

Some of our clients have electively opted-out of their insurance coverage for receiving mental health benefits due to their legitimate concerns about “third-parties” having access to any private information which could be embarrassing or otherwise damaging.  Some of our clients conscientiously object to the requirement of their insurance company that a clinical diagnosis be rendered. Some of our clients do not want to be required by their insurance companies to take prescribed psychotropic medications. Some of our clients also discover that their voluntary decision to seek prophylactic and/or rehabilitative mental health services may eventually be penalized if they seek to purchase disability or life insurance.

“For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul”?  Is not the very purpose of seeking appropriate guidance and help in the finding and meaningful utilization of it?  Therefore, the chief benefits of psychological services reside in the successive differentiation and hierarchic integration of mind, body and spirit coupled with the reclamation of one’s heart and soul!

Northern Illinois Counseling Associates, P.C. (NICA) is here to help “benefit” you right now.
